Structured Access Pathways for Unapproved Medicines in New Zealand
Managed Access Programmes are sponsor-led arrangements that provide eligible patients with access to medicines outside standard commercial supply channels. They may support early access ahead of approval, access to medicines not routinely available or funded in New Zealand, or continuity of treatment following a clinical trial. Managed Access Programmes are not a separate statutory approval pathway in New Zealand. Where an unapproved medicine is supplied under Section 29 of the Medicines Act 1981, each supply must relate to a named patient under the care of an eligible prescriber. HL Pharma coordinates programme logistics with applicable Medsafe requirements, hospital medicines access procedures and pharmacy governance arrangements to support appropriate oversight, product traceability and clear documentation.

Relevant controlled medicine and import requirements are assessed as part of programme planning. Each supply remains subject to product availability, eligible prescriber authorisation and applicable New Zealand regulatory and import arrangements.
